Spring Landscaping Checklist for New Jersey Homeowners

New Jersey springs can swing from frost to heat in a matter of weeks, so timing your yard work to the season makes a real difference. Use this checklist to get your lawn and beds healthy and sharp before summer arrives.
1. Start with a cleanup
Clear leaves, fallen branches, and winter debris from your lawn and beds. Cut back spent perennials and ornamental grasses, and edge your beds to give everything a crisp, defined line. A good cleanup sets the stage for everything else.
2. Refresh your mulch
A fresh layer of mulch locks in moisture, suppresses weeds, and instantly makes a property look cared for. Two to three inches is plenty, and keep it pulled back slightly from stems and trunks. In our area, late spring is a great time to mulch once the soil has warmed.
3. Feed and overseed the lawn
Spring is the time to give cool-season lawns a boost. A balanced feeding and spot overseeding of thin or bare patches will thicken the turf before summer stress sets in. Hold off on heavy reseeding until conditions are right.
4. Tune up your irrigation
If you have a sprinkler system, schedule a spring startup: check each zone, clear or adjust heads, and set a sensible watering schedule. Catching a broken head now saves water and money all summer.
5. Plant for the season
Once the danger of frost has passed, add seasonal color and any new shrubs or perennials. Choosing plants suited to your light and soil means less maintenance and better results.
6. Know when to call in a crew
